I’m a baller on a budget. Have been since early childhood. Growing up we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on clothing of the fun and fashionable variety. My aunt used to give me my cousin’s old hand-me-downs, … Continue reading
I believe that true style comes naturally but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Hollywood starlets and wanna-be pop princesses can strut around in designer labels and sit in the front row at Paris fashion week, but that still doesn’t mean they have great style….it means that have great stylists.
I’m talking about those people who are icons, who evolved into fashion legends. I’m talking about the classics! In this article, I’d like to highlight and pay tribute to some women who exemplify a style that should be admired and never overlooked.
Grace Kelly: A woman who embodied her own name, Grace Kelly portrayed a classic elegance that was neither imposing nor timid. Though she was ultimately to become a princess to another nation, she was and still is considered American royalty by fashion lovers everywhere. She dressed according to her hourglass figure, adhering to fitted waistlines and full skirts. Her most notable fashion moment was perhaps the day of her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco. Many are familiar with pictures of Grace, looking resplendent in a high collared lace gown complete with a full skirt and flowing train. The soon-to-be princess looked so angelic that her dress is still used as inspiration to brides today, most recently seen in the lovely confection worn by Kate Middleton (now Duchess of Cambridge). To me, the most trademark feature of Grace Kelley’s style was the general aura of her style; trim, tidy, polished with not a hair out of place. The sophistication of a matching purse and shoe accompanied by a subtle sheen from a strand of pearls is what makes Grace Kelly the iconic woman of fashion. Few can match the class she brought to the silver screen and fewer still can capture her classic sense of style.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: Another great American beauty and style icon, Jackie was always the belle of any ball she attended. As wife to the 35th president of the United States, Jackie was the symbol of classic American style to all that had the privilege to see on the arm of John F. Kennedy. One of the privileges of being the president’s wife was that Jackie was allowed to keep famous fashion designers like Oleg Cassini on retainer. During her years as the first lady, Jackie maintained a clean cut look with tailored skirts, dresses, and jackets (usually accompanied by her signature pill-box hat). In her later years, she relaxed her style and embraced a more bohemian look; longer hair, pants instead of skirts and of course, giant sunglasses. No matter what fashion vibe she was channeling, Jackie always looked put-together and unique.
Doris Day: A lovable actress whose musical films were number one hits in the 1950s and 1960s, Doris Day brought a sunny disposition and cheerful sense of style to the silver screen. Whether she was breaking up to make up with Rock Hudson, or trying to win back the affections of James Gardner, Doris’s characters were always cute, charming, and colorfully dressed (much like the actress in real life). Though not seriously sophisticated or consistently elegant, her luminous smile and vibrant wardrobe is worth mentioning as are her films. To catch some of the lively (and always color-coordinated) apparel, check out Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, A Touch of Mink, and Move Over, Darling.
Emma Watson: The most current icon to make my list, Emma Watson has a certain sparkle and whit that many starlets of today lack. Most notable (besides that fact that she starred in one of the most popular film series of the last decade) is that Emma brings a sense of whimsy and femininity to everything she wears. Being a petite actress, she can pull off a lot of styles that would not suitable for taller women; she seems to favor shapelier silhouettes that are well constructed and show off her legs. Her knack for fashion is so notable that she won Best British Style at the 2014 British Fashion Awards and has modeled for both Burberry and Lancôme. Her general presence is one of grace, sophistication, and daring; I’m excited to see her style continue to evolve in the years to come.
Other style icons not to be overlooked are….
Princess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Queen of Stylish Sophistication.
Diana Vreeland, late editor-in-chief of Vogue and life-long fashionista.
Emmy Rossum, beautiful singer and actress. Many recognize her as Christine from the film Phantom of the Opera; others recognize her unique sense of style.
I’m pretty picky when it comes to my TV shows; my number one favorite show by far is Golden Girls, and their last season ended in 1992. Say what you will about 80’s and 90’s fashion, those ladies had style! … Continue reading
Tick Tock. There goes the alarm on my clock. Time to rise and shine even though the sun is still in bed. It’s 4:50am on a Monday morning. And it’s time to get ready for work. (Since starting full time … Continue reading
Hey fashionistas! Want to get your hands on some great designer pieces? Clear your calendars for this Sunday September 15th when Phillip Lim’s affordable collection goes on sale in Target stores everywhere.
Ok so maybe you don’t need to clear the WHOLE day, but at least plan a few hours for you to sneak away and take a look at this special collection. The collaboration with Target and Phillip Lim gives you an opportunity to add some designer looks to your wardrobe at prices you’ll love! A match made in heaven if you ask me 🙂
Phillip Lim debuted his company 3.1 Phillip Lim in 2005 with a fall collection for women and hasn’t stopped wowing us since. Phillip is known for taking classic clothing up a notch or two. He adds extra details putting style and a fashionable edge into pieces that can often have a generic look. Beginning his line with women apparel, Lim soon expanded to menswear, children apparel, accessories, shoes and even eye-wear. His success had been fast and climbing. Phillip has taken his brand from a single women’s collection to more than 250 stores around the world.
Target will be bringing Phillip Lim designs to their everyday shoppers with a line specifically created to be more affordable. Quality in chicness will not be lost however, there will be plenty of bold prints and colors mixed with classic and structured pieces. From sweaters and skirts, to trench coats and hand bags, it will all be at available at Target.
You may have seen the “BOOM” sweater already. It has been worn by celebrities like Jessica Alba and talked about in a lot of the fall fashion coverage the last few weeks. This “BOOM” sweater is already a hit; I am hoping to get my hands on one 🙂
So be sure to stop into Target and check out the looks from Phillip Lim. It is a great chance to purchase a few designer duds without having to sell your car, boat, diamond, first born child, etc… The stores will be starting sales on September 15, 2013. I am sure these pieces will be going fast so if you are interested, no dilly dallying. 😉

Selena Gomez has made her way from a Disney it girl, to a Hollywood heart breaker. Despite the wrath she got from the Biebster’s fans during their on again off again relationship, Selena seems to be loved by all. From TV series like Barney and Friends and Wizards of Waverly Place, to music like Disney channel cover tracks and records of her very own, Selena has made it happen and become a star.
At the 2013 VMA’s Selena received The Best Pop Video award for her newest single “When your Ready Come and Get it.” The award just confirmed the huge success of the song, but music isn’t all Selena has going for her. Her personal style is something to pay attention to. Selena’s fashion is right on. She dresses trend right, appropriate, and looks comfortable in her own skin. Her confidence radiates though her wardrobe whether she is walking down the red carpet, or out the door of Starbucks. Selena’s style is simple, elegant, and comfortable.
Selena’s red carpet looks can be summed up with the word “Elegant.” The pieces she chooses to wear have enough detail and WOW factor to hold their own. She doesn’t often need many accessories, keeping her outfits simple and uncomplicated. Selena’s best accessory is her own true beauty, and that’s what we love about her!
Even on the streets Selena stays true to herself. Her comfortable, casual look makes her seem “for real” and down to earth. Combat style boots, denim, scarves, and slouchy tops seem to be her thing. Shes got edge that’s for sure; and might I add she is great at pulling off the Grunge Chic look 🙂
There you have it, Selena is a Style star. She seems to be conscious of looking appropriate for her age, the occasion, and her own personal style. Those qualities alone make her an amazing style role model. Whats your favorite look of Selena’s? Post here or on our Facebook page 🙂
Have a Magical Day!
With so much to do and so little time, as we discussed in “Shop…Don’t Drop”, whenever you are able to kill two birds with one stone it gives you a good feeling that you are getting things accomplished. We all want to look our best and sometimes ensuring we are up to par on dressing, styling, and separating our looks gets overwhelming (see How to Dress in a Way that Says… “Go You”!.) That’s why I love the concept of an embellished top. No need to add an accessory here. Embellished tops serve the purpose of dressing and styling in one simple piece.
From lightweight sweaters to simple tees, the embellished top will make its way once again into fall fashion. Here are some great tops I found and links for where to buy 🙂 Happy shopping!
