Let’s Get Ready to Gobble!

We now have entered the season of family, food, and Thanksgiving. From now until the New Year we will be gathering, eating and enjoying holiday festivities with our loved ones. While your radio is probably already playing Christmas tunes and your local Macy’s looks like like the North Pole, there is still that special holiday in November that we sometimes tend to fly right through. Thanksgiving is right around the corner making tummies rumble all over the country.

Being the fashion forward individuals we are, the importance of presentation in everything is a given. The holidays are a prefect time to put your creativity and fashion sense to the test. Here are some tips on hosting a Thanksgiving that will be memorable for all your guests:

Dress the table: “Stoke the fire, break out the silver, wake the china.” Potts, Mrs. It’s only one (or two counting Christmas) days a year. Use your special plates, glasses and silverware and set the stage for that turkey centerpiece. You wouldn’t put on a play without lights, mics, and costumes would you? Napkins, rings, candles, a salad AND a dinner plate; they all make a boring table look great and “gather-able.”

Fashion the Food: Like we stated above, presentation is everything. Even the worst cooks can make food look good. Take the extra step to garnish, toss and glaze. This will take your meal to the next level adding color and texture to your cornucopia of deliciousness. So grab your prettiest platters, salad bowls, and serving spoons.

Make memories: Add a special touch to your dinnertime. My mom has created a tradition at Thanksgiving that all in attendance have come to know. She sets a verse at every plate and before our meal, we will go around the table sharing our verse along with something we are thankful for. It is a nice time to reflect together on our blessings, and get everyone involved. Be creative and come up with something that everyone can partake in. It may seem awkward at first, but in the end you will only remember the special memories and moments of the time around the table.

An overall Holiday Hosting tip: Don’t just set the table, set the stage! Look through Pinterest, home décor magazines, and even store fronts for ideas on taking your table to the next level. There are loads of cute and creative ways to add a little something extra to the standard place setting. Check out some of these pins from Pinterest….

See how those extra details make a big impact. Get some small pumpkins when you are at the super market getting your ingredients or ask your kids to search for the prettiest leaves while they are playing outside. These are elements of fall and will bring the warm textures, smells, and colors into your home for all to enjoy.

“Cruella Deville, Cruella Deville….”

Cheetahs and Tigers and Bears O MY! Faux fur is here and hot this season adding texture, warmth, and Ooo La La to looks around the globe.

Cruella De Vil3

How can you get your paws on this wild trend? Well you don’t have to start scoping out the neighborhood pups for your favorite print Cruella! No no, your local mall or cozy couch and lap top will do the trick. Styles in brown, grey, black, white, blue, cheetah, tiger, zebra.. the list goes on and on. Whatever you choose, wear it with confidence! While it may seem like a step on the wild side, sporting a bit of fur will make you feel elegant, classy and perhaps a bit seductive. 😉

Look for a great fur jacket or vest. These pieces will add glamor to any look. Pair it with some skinny jeans or black leather leggings to keep proportional contrast. You could also wear it with a fitted dress or skirt. I wore my H&M fur vest with my Phillip Lim skirt from target and leopard booties:

If your looking for something more subtle, try a piece that has fur trim or is worn as an accessory. A cardigan trimmed with fur, gloves with a fur cuff, a fur hat or scarf. These are all fashion forward but not as overwhelming as a a leopard fur jacket or full length fur coat… Baby steps 😉

Go for something you are comfortable with but try stepping out of the box and adding at lest ONE thing furry to your wardrobe. Trust me, only good things can come of it 🙂

Here are some great stores you can seek out your furry finds:

Phillip Lim Designs a Collection for Target

Hey fashionistas! Want to get your hands on some great designer pieces? Clear your calendars for this Sunday September 15th when Phillip Lim’s affordable collection goes on sale in Target stores everywhere.

Ok so maybe you don’t need to clear the WHOLE day, but at least plan a few hours for you to sneak away and take a look at this special collection. The collaboration with Target and Phillip Lim gives you an opportunity to add some designer looks to your wardrobe at prices you’ll love! A match made in heaven if you ask me 🙂

Phillip Lim debuted his company 3.1 Phillip Lim in 2005 with a fall collection for women and hasn’t stopped wowing us since. Phillip is known for taking classic clothing up a notch or two. He adds extra details putting style and a fashionable edge into pieces that can often have a generic look. Beginning his line with women apparel, Lim soon expanded to menswear, children apparel, accessories, shoes and even eye-wear. His success had been fast and climbing. Phillip has taken his brand from a single women’s collection to more than 250 stores around the world.

Target will be bringing Phillip Lim designs to their everyday shoppers with a line specifically created to be more affordable. Quality in chicness will not be lost however, there will be plenty of bold prints and colors mixed with classic and structured pieces. From sweaters and skirts, to trench coats and hand bags, it will all be at available at Target.

You may have seen the “BOOM” sweater already. It has been worn by celebrities like Jessica Alba and talked about in a lot of the fall fashion coverage the last few weeks. This “BOOM” sweater is already a hit; I am hoping to get my hands on one 🙂

So be sure to stop into Target and check out the looks from Phillip Lim. It is a great chance to purchase a few designer duds without having to sell your car, boat, diamond, first born child, etc… The stores will be starting sales on September 15, 2013. I am sure these pieces will be going fast so if you are interested, no dilly dallying. 😉

Dig Deeper: A Focus on “Grunge Chic”

Hopefully you have read our recent post Just Say “Yes” and learned a little about what trends are hitting the streets this fall. Fashion seems to be turning into some new and inspired styles and, if your like me, you can’t help but be anxious to test the waters; but where to start? No fear! We are here to guide you on how you can integrate these Fall 2013 trends into your personal style. We will start today with the “grunge chic” look that seems to be making a come back from the 90’s. Now before you go to your closet and “rub some dirt on it,” here are some ideas on how to pull of this rather sloppy idea in a chic and appropriate way.

The concept of “grunge chic” is to mix casual and posh pieces. Depending on the occasion, you may need more posh than casual or via versus. Here’s what I mean…

gringe chic 1

The image to the left is a great example of using more posh pieces in your grunge chic outfit. She wears a pair of knock-out gold slim pants with a patterned open blazer; but wait… she also has on those combat style black boots adding that touch of grunge, and looking ever so chic.

A grunge chic look from the runway, we have the same idea on the right. The long sparkle skirt incorporates the fall shiny fabric trend and the red and blue plaid blouse, that has a similar structure to a blazer, incorporates the grunge trend. The sheer fabric brings elegance toning down, but not eliminating the grunge factor.

Taking it to the next level involves lots of layering, hats, and choosing colors like navy, hunter green, denim, black leather and deep reds. We see fur jackets mixed with graphic tees, ripped jeans, leather pants, black tights with shorts, army green jackets, leather boots and plaid flannel button downs.

I love the two girls on the left. They are styled, and have a mix of fun pieces that overall pull off an amazing grunge chic look. On the more carefree and casual side for sure, but their style is not sloppy.

On the right… here comes the leather and plaid! See how she mixed the clean white graphic tee under the leather jacket, and wore those clean dark denim skinnies with black stilettos. All very simple and sleek, but then she added that plaid flannel button down around her waist mixing it up and bringing on the grunge. It changed the whole vibe of her outfit from “hot tough girl” to “laid back and lovin it.”

Whether you just want a touch of this trend or want to go all out with smudged black eyeliner and perhaps a lip ring or two, there are plenty of grunge chic pieces you will see in the stores this fall. Maybe pick up a plaid flannel button down, some graphic tees and a leather something (pants, jacket, bag, boots…)

Check our our Pinterest Grunge Chic board for more looks to love. We hope to inspire you to try the trend. Show us what you come up with and post pics to our FB page!

Convienant Style: Embellished Tops

With so much to do and so little time, as we discussed in “Shop…Don’t Drop”, whenever you are able to kill two birds with one stone it gives you a good feeling that you are getting things accomplished. We all want to look our best and sometimes ensuring we are up to par on dressing, styling, and separating our looks gets overwhelming (see How to Dress in a Way that Says… “Go You”!.) That’s why I love the concept of an embellished top. No need to add an accessory here. Embellished tops serve the purpose of dressing and styling in one simple piece.

From lightweight sweaters to simple tees, the embellished top will make its way once again into fall fashion. Here are some great tops I found and links for where to buy 🙂 Happy shopping!

Just Say “YES”

A recent conversation with a very wise friend reminded me the power and impact of the word “NO”. Two letters, one syllable, yet so powerful. The word is so definite, so abrupt, and extremely deflating. “NO” is simply overused.

When it comes to fashion, the only way to keep up is to say “YES.” How many times have you seen a new trend and thought, or said out loud, “I would NEVER wear that. What are these people thinking?” only to be buying into that same trend two months later because, oh ya it actually is cool. Been there. Sometimes we put our foot in our mouth when it comes to new styles because well, they are new and unfamiliar. As creatures of habit its what we do. New trends are always around the corner. Unless you want to turn in your “chic card,” you will need not judge and just try. What can it hurt? You may as well be ahead of the game so that when the others do catch up, they will see what you knew all along 😉 Invigorating right?

Here is a list of upcoming 2013 Fall trends to look out for and start thinking about saying “YES” to.

Image from "Glamour"

Image from “Glamour

Blue Shades: Mixing different shades of blue is a huge upcoming trend; so many shades, so little time!

Shiny Fabric: Metallic fabrics, glossy leather, and smooth silhouettes is a must for a fall look that shines.

Super-sized Coats: You will sure be warm this winter. Over-sized outerwear is where its at.

Grunge: patterns like plaid, rock inspired pieces, and irreverent prints help build this layered style.

Impactful Details: Jewels, feathers, appliques and embellishments that steal the show and make the look.

Structural Bags: Boxy shapes, clean lines and sharp edges is what makes these accessories sleek.

Stabilized Shoes: thicker heels, rounded toes, heavier soles, these will make for a more comfortable day. YAY 🙂

Opportunities are everywhere and “NO” stops them in their tracks. Opportunities to learn, try a new food, test a new idea, accomplish something in a different way, meet new people, wear something unique, try a new trend, or push yourself out of your comfort zone, can all be missed by this simple word. I don’t mean to sound like an exerpt from the movie “Yes Man” but we could really learn something from good old Jim Carey. If you say “YES” to an idea you may learn something new, or maybe a better way to accomplish something. if you say “YES” to meeting new people, you could be creating a connection that will lead to great friendships, business ventures, or…. more opportunities! if you say “YES” to something that will push yourself out of your comfort zone, you may realize you are capable of that much more. If you say “YES” to new fashions, your style will always be top notch and fearless. What do you have to loose? NOTHING! What do you have to gain? If nothings else, knowledge. You now know what you like and don’t like, what works and doesn’t. Great! Move on to the next “YES” and learn something else. 🙂

I hope this gets you thinking and excited for what’s to come. This article from FABSUGAR, Fall Fashion Trends 2013” will give you a closer look at each trend. Tell us what trends your unsure about and which ones you are excited to say “YES” to! We can’t wait to hear so post below!!!
