As we breeze through spring and come ever closer to summer, brilliant greenery and delicate blossoms are everywhere you look, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Men, women, and children are packing away their dark wools and heavy knits of winter and changing into light and colorful clothes that match the beautiful weather. With this shift in seasonal apparel comes interesting new trends, one of which I am so excited about. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the flower crown!
[Small confession: I have always been obsessed with fairies. I love everything them; the delicate gossamer wings, rose petal garments, and delicate flower headdresses. So it should comes as no surprise to anyone that the main trend I am absolutely LOVING is the flower crown.]
Earliest imagery of the flower crown dates back to ancient Greece in the form of laurel leaf wreaths, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Eve had donned a circlet of blossoms as she strolled through the Garden of Eden with Adam. While some might think the flower crown is just a tiara of pretty vegetation, there is a ton of symbolism and meaning behind every blossom and bloom. For example….
- Gardenias symbolize purity and joy
- Orchids symbolize love and beauty
- Tulips symbolize passion
- Hydrangeas symbolizes perseverance
- Roses symbolize love and passion (also the national flower of the United States)
The flower crown has since been the accessory of choice for women (and men) throughout the ages and not surprisingly has come full circle to be one of the hottest trends in present day fashion. Most frequently seen at musical festivals, concerts and music videos, the flower crown is definitely becoming a “Coachella”look. But you don’t have to attend a concert to justify wearing flowers in your hair. This trend looks radiant on everyone! Wear a small wreath of roses with a breezy summer dress, or try a circlet of daises with jean shorts and a t-shirt. You are the prince or princess of your own style! Treat yourself to nature’s crown!
